Project Approach

How We Helped Them
We-Collab implemented a structured, collaborative process to guide the cohort through the six-month co-design phase. Our approach focused on fostering meaningful relationships, encouraging innovation, and aligning organizational efforts.

  • Onboarding & Team Building: We introduced participants to the initiative and used interactive exercises, like the “Tarp Poles,” to build relationships and improve collaboration. These activities promoted self-awareness and teamwork, laying the foundation for effective cooperation.
  • Hybrid Facilitation: We led a series of virtual and in-person convenings, ensuring consistent engagement and flexibility. Subgroups were formed around key areas such as policy, messaging, and power-building to drive focused collaboration.
  • Research & Insights: We interviewed each organization to understand its unique strengths and identify existing relationships within the group. This allowed us to craft a tailored strategy for collaboration and policy development.

Family Advisory Council (FAC): A key element of the process was the inclusion of FAC, a group of caretakers whose experiences informed the initiative’s direction. We helped bridge the gap between their lived experiences and the broader policy discussions, ensuring the project remained grounded in the realities of the communities affected.

Project Results

The Impact
We-Collab’s facilitation led to several important outcomes:

  • Cohort Collaboration: We helped establish trust and collaboration among 10 national organizations, guiding them to work together effectively across advocacy fields. This process fostered greater collaboration between the fields of economic and family care policy. These strengthened relationships enabled the cohort to design a cohesive plan for advancing policies that address the interconnected needs of families and communities.
  • Development of a Scalable Model: The initiative produced a scalable model for cross-sector collaboration, which can be adapted for future cohorts. The process resulted in shared goals, governance structures, and a two-year budget—laying a foundation for long-term collaboration without heavy reliance on external funding.
  • Shared Decision-Making: Through structured decision-making processes, including interviews and subcommittees, the cohort selected anchor institutions to lead the next phase of the initiative. This ensured that leadership was driven by consensus, not funder mandates.
  • Centering Lived Experiences: Including the Family Advisory Council brought critical, often overlooked perspectives into the design process. This allowed the cohort to focus on the real-world implications of policy decisions for families and children in underserved communities.
